About Our Ypsilanti Public Charter School

WSC Academy combines technology-based learning with teacher-led instruction in a small class atmosphere, which allows students to accomplish their academic goals in a flexible and supportive learning environment at their own pace. Our highly qualified teachers and staff work closely with students to ensure they are successfully meeting academic goals while providing college and career readiness.

 

Academics

​

Students earn their credits through our online courses but are given additional instruction by our highly qualified teaching staff. We enroll both traditional and non-traditional students and therefore, approach the curriculum differently than other area programs. The curriculum at WSC Academy is individualized to each student’s needs. Students who are identified as needing additional support with reading and math are coached to increase their comprehension in small reading and math workshop courses.

With the Academy’s blended learning model, students are empowered to make choices in their educational path. Upon completing a course, students complete an individual, partnered, and small group project demonstrating their ability to apply the knowledge of their content to a real-world application. The projects prepare students for careers or college where they must propose a project, work creatively on the project, receive feedback and revise based on the feedback.

School Hours are Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-3:10pm.

​

Students and parents/guardians can speak with the counseling and administrative staff for flexible scheduling options. Credit recovery students may have the option to leave at 1:10pm daily.

 

Elective Courses and Extracurricular Activities

​

WSC Academy believes in engaging students to work collaboratively through elective courses and extracurricular activities. Our students have the opportunity to be part of the WSC Academy Basketball Team, Golf Club, Journalism Class and Theatre Productions. Additionally, our student leaders were recognized and rewarded as Student Leadership Advocates who serve as liaisons to new students and professionals who visit WSC Academy.

 

Project Based Learning (PBL)

WSC Academy offers Instructor Led/Project-based Learning (PBL). Project-based learning is an instructional method that provides students with complex tasks based on challenging questions or problems that involve the students’ in problem solving, decision making, investigative skills, and reflection that includes teacher facilitation. PBL is focused on questions that drive students to encounter the central concepts and principles of a subject hands-on. PBL is a unique teaching technique that promotes and practices new learning habits, emphasizing creative thinking skills by allowing students to find that there are many ways to solve a problem.

WSC Academy’s instructor-led classes appeal to nontraditional learners through project based learning that meets the Michigan Merit Curriculum.

Career and College Readiness

​

With increasing demands of the 21st century workforce, there is no question that all students should graduate from high school fully prepared for college and careers. WSC Academy students interested in enrolling in college will follow a college-bound educational track, with guidance from our Guidance Counselor. Additionally, our students have the opportunity to develop career readiness skills through a network of youth-servicing agencies and organizations, as well as area employers essential to entry into the workforce and selecting a career path.
